Ways to Discover Your Work Vision
Sources of Joy, Passion and Wonder at Work
Ways to Overcome Burnout

  • Trust that you have a unique and necessary contribution to make to the universe.

  • Trust that your native gifts and accumulated experiences, skills and activities have already made a difference in other peoples’ lives.

  • Pray regularly that your work vision be revealed.

  • Meditate on such questions as “What is my calling?” “What do I love to do?” “What are my gifts?” “How can I serve Creator and creation?” “How can I best employ my joy and creativity?” and “What suffering can I help heal?”

  • Create poems, songs, drawings, and dances that reflect the insights you receive in prayer/meditation; contemplate these creations for further insights.

  • Examine your dreams for recurrent themes, symbols and images.

  • Pay attention to synchronicities in your life.

  • Reflect on your childhood passions, joys and talents.

  • Remember that your calling(s) may have multiple dimensions and aspects.

  • Realize that your vision will gradually unfold, clarify and transform over time.

  • Opportunities to express native passions and talents as well as acquired skills and knowledge

  • Opportunities to stretch and grow emotionally, intellectually, socially, spiritually

  • Recognition of passions, talents, skills, knowledge, accomplishments

  • Freedom to explore, invent, experiment, create alone and together

  • Opportunities for genuine cooperation and collaboration

  • Atmosphere supporting trust, integrity, friendship and community

  • Participation in activities that serve, heal, inspire, protect, benefit others (human and other than human beings)

  • Participation in decision-making activities

  • Access to nature

  • Fair compensation for performance

 

Ways to Overcome Burnout

  • Develop a spiritual practice (e.g., prayer, meditation, mindfulness, spiritual community, social service, ritual, celebration)

  • Treat yourself and others with compassion, love, generosity and justice

  • Practice gratitude and forgiveness

  • Let your work (right livelihood) express your deepest values, visions, dreams, passions

  • Set priorities and allocate time and energy accordingly

  • Be clear about and communicate your limits and boundaries; say “no” to excessive duties, tasks, overtime

  • Delegate tasks you don’t need to do personally

  • Use creativity and collaboration to more effectively

  • Take regular breaks each day

  • Don’t skip vacations
